Recent site updates
Anyone following this website may have noticed many features which have changed recently (for the better). Some of the things which have recently changed are:
1) New theme: Indeed the old theme was too dark. In fact, it also suffered usability issues on the admin side (I was actually forced to use multiple themes). So I recently changed to the Salamander theme which works sitewide, and also supports dropdown menus (which allows users with low resolution screens to see the entire menu's without needing to scroll down.
2) Domain Name changed: Unfortunately there is an online store known as Down Under Pilot's. I knew it when I ordered pilotsdownunder.com, however, I never realised it was such a problem. However, upon analysing the logs, it turned out most users arriving here were actually trying to go to the webstore (and went to the wrong location). So hence why the name is unique now.
3) Better Image integration: Yep, we have images all over now. Thats handy ;) The way I was doing it before was a tad dodgy..
4) More data available: I have added support for Vspeeds and such now, and companies are no longer limited by country.
So what else is in progress?
1) Better web links page. I still don't like the other one, its kind of fugly. Furthermore, it still needs more categories and such
2) More submenu's covering cheapest planes available and such.
3) Sample exam questions. Lets get some sample exam questions up, so we no longer have to deal with some of the dodgy exams available (not all of them are bad, but some of them have gone electronic and are designed to inconveniance subscribers.
4) Unit converter. Yes we all use google. But if we centralise all the calculations, at the very least, we can jump straight to a single plane to access conversion information such as: LMT to UTC conversions, Groundspeed calculations, etc (the stuff google doesn't allow). At the very least could be used to double check calculations.
5) Turn Android mobiles into flight computers. CX-2's cost too much, and it would be nice to be able to reuse a mobile phone as an electronic flight computer. Instead of spending $150 on a flight computer, and $400 on a mobile, we can then save $150
6) Nicer start page. Yes, its shocking. I know.
7) About us page. Not really neccessary, but provide a way to contact us as well.
8) Equipment reviews / ratings. Found your headset fell apart in a year? Bought a computerised exam which was brilliant, or bought a sickbag which started leaking on the way back. It might be great to know that there is a carbon monoxide detector which lasts 18 months before buying one which only lasts 1.
9) Price comparison's of pilot equipment between stores. Also, reviews on the store themselves. Sometimes you may not realise after buying your CPL collection of books for $270 somewhere, that every other store (including the one around the corner) is selling it for $220.
10) Less suckage overall. I still think this site needs more work
11) More users and a faster site. Haven't started my adwords campaign yet because I want the site to be awesome first. But once it has more data, hoping to improve my site enough so that users flood in :D
What's Upcoming
Just thought we'd give you an update of what we expect to be added to this site.
1) Web links page. As you may have noticed, it is already online, but isn't quite how good as we would like it yet actually. More useful links, better categories, and posting for all.Read more
